Maria Fernanda Cury-Boaventura has completed his PhD on Human Physiology at the age of 26 years from University of São Paulo and postdoctoral studies from University of São Paulo. She is professor and researcher at Institute of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences since 2007. She has published more than 40 papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an editorial board member of repute. Medical School (HMS). At MGH, she is also affiliated faculty at the Mongan Institute of Health Policy and an Associate at the Disparities Solution Center. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine and a Fellow of the Obesity Society. Dr. Stanford received her BS and MPH from Emory University, her MD from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, and her MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Don Schalch completed his M.D. at the Univ. of Cincinnati, OH, in 1960 and medicine residency and fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the Univ. of Rochester, NY, in 1964, whereupon he joined the faculty. He was visiting scientist at Erasmus Univ. in Rotterdam and at Kantonspital in Zürich in 1972-73, and joined the Univ. of Colorado Medical School facutly in Denver, CO in 1974. In 1982, he became chief of endocrinology at the Univ. of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He has published 101 papers, been reviewer for 3 journals, and became emeritus professor in 1999.

Thais Borges Cesar is an Associate Professor of Nutrition, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sao Paulo State University (UNESP), Araraquara, Brazil. She has a BS in Biology and Ph.D. in Food Science and Nutrition, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. She did post-doctoral at the Boston Universit and at the Citrus and Subtropical Products Research Laboratory, ARS-USDA. Dr Cesar’s scientific focus is investigating the nutritional and metabolic properties of citrus fruits in clinical studies and animal models, regarding to the effect of its bioactive compounds as a protection factor against the development of chronic diseases.

Quang Kim Tran received an MD from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and a PhD in Vascular Biology and Clinical Cardiology Fellowship from Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, Japan. He pursued Post-doctoral Training in the School of Biological Sciences, University of Missouri–Kansas City, USA, where he later became a Research Instructor. He is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Iowa, USA. He has served as President of the Iowa Chapter of the American Physiological Society and as Reviewer for various scientific journals in the cardiovascular field. involves understanding causes for type 2 diabetes and potential therapeutic targets. The main aim of the team is to develop translational multidisciplinary medical research into obesity and type 2 diabetes. The current research programmes are exploring the underlying mechanisms that lead to the pathogenesis of obesity mediated type 2 diabetes. As such we have researchers within the team focussed on human metabolism examining several aspects such as: the importance of adipokines on human adipocyte signalling, mediators and mechanisms of inflammation, understanding the importance of diet and cell signalling in response to metabolic endotoxinaemia, the role of ectopic fat in the liver and heart, as well as using mathematical modelling of human adipocyte systems.

Novel mechanistic insights into the actions of the G-protein coupled estrogen receptor as a moderator of cardiovascular health.A mechanistic model for the role of GPER as a moderator of cardiovascular functions will be presented. The data and summative model encourage therapeutic exploitation of GPER activation and expression in the management of cardiovascular morbidity.

Maarten Bak is a psychatrist since 1999, trained Maastricht Univesity Hospital. He has compledted his PhD in 2004: ‘Coping with psychosis; Blueler’s right’. He is director of the Medication monitor, assessing effects and side effects of long term antipsychotc use. The side effects monitored are metabolic effects, movement disorders and sexual side effects. His scienticfic wordk centers around effect and metabolic side effects of antipsychotics. He has published over 50 papers in reputed journals.

I trained in medicine at Cambridge and Birmingham and then worked for the Medical Research Council at their mineral metabolism unit in Leeds where I developed my interest in metabolic bone disease. I completed my training in endocrinology at Newcastle and moved to Manchester in 1990. My main academic interests are the effect of non-skeletal diseases on bone and the assessment and treatment of osteoporosis. I am at Tustee of the National Osteoporosis Society having previously been their Treasurer and secretary of the Bone and Tooth Society. I am a member of the NICE guidelines development group for osteoporosis.

I also have an interest in Paget's disease and am currently chairman of the National Association for the Relief of Paget's disease and an international adviser to the Paget Foundation in the United States
