Biography
Roland Hetzer visited the Holbein-Gymnasium Augsburg . After high school he studied from 1963 medicine at the University of Mainz , before moving to 1964 to the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich . In 1969 he made then the state exam and the American ECFMG exam. In the same year his doctorate he to Dr. med. [1] In 1970 he was approved . After subsequent work as a medical assistant in Augsburg Roland Hetzer took in 1971 a position as a research assistant at the Hannover Medical School and went in 1976 as a Clinical Fellow at the California Pacific Medical Center and Stanford University , where Norman Shumway performed pioneered heart surgery. In 1977 he became a specialist for surgery. Upon his return to Germany he worked as a senior physician in Hannover from 1978th There habilitation he 1979. [2] In 1983 he received an extraordinary professorship and started in the same year in Hannover heart transplant to establish. With the appointment of Professor Hetzer came 1985 to Berlin at the Free University and built as a senior physician of cardiac surgery and medical director the German Heart Institute Berlin (DHZB) on. In 1987 he took over the first successful implantation of an artificial heart before. In 1990, he was the last chairman of the West Berlin part of the Berlin Surgical Society . For October 1, 2014 Hetzer joined as Medical Director and Director of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery of DHZB to retirement; Successor is Volkmar Falk . [3] For his achievements Hetzer in 1987 with the Order of Merit of Berlin and 1995 for the establishment of the Academy of Cardiovascular and related state recognition of training as perfusionist, with the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class Award. He is since 2009 Chairman of the European register of patients with mechanical circulatory support e. V., Euromacs. Roland Hetzer is married and father of four children. His brother Gerhard Hetzer's manager (director) of the Bavarian State Archives in Munich. Roland Hetzer is a member of the Catholic Fraternity K.St.V. Ludovicia Augsburg in KV .
