Kim Solez, M.D., FRCPC, Professor of Pathology at the University of Alberta, and President and CEO of Transpath Inc., is one of the world’s foremost kidney pathologists. He is the father of the Banff classification that sets standards worldwide for how biopsies from kidney and other solid organ transplants are interpreted, and started the post-earthquake disaster relief task force of the International Society of Nephrology. He is a popular blogger on internetevolution.com, and directs NKF cyberNephrology, a joint venture of the National Kidney Foundation (U.S.) and the University of Alberta. James Michaelson PhD is the Director of the Laboratory of Quantitative Medicine, Member of the Departments of Pathology and Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and Associate Professor, Harvard University. He completed college, medical school and residency training in Pathology at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Cochran is Chief Executive Officer of Chestatee Pathology Associates, PC, a private practice in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine which employs 9 pathologists and owns, directs and/or operates multiple anatomic and clinical pathology labs in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Rajat Sethi received is currently the Chair of Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences, and Director of Research at the California Health Sciences University, Clovis, California. He received his Ph.D.from the Department of Medicine, University of Manitoba, Canada. Dr. Sethi. He has more than 100 publications in the field of cardiac pathology and toxicity, holds 22US and international patents, has authored/edited more than 9 books, written more than 22 chapters, editor for many journals , and serves in the editorial board for many journals.Dr. Sethi is the recipient of numerous federal and state grants and has also received funds from various foundations. He is the invited speaker in many national and international conferences. He has received many recognitions for his contribution to research and for promoting student scholarship.

Cardiac pathology

Dr.Richard Y. Zhao, a Molecular Pathologist, is a Tenured Professor of Pathology, Microbiology-Immunology and Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Zhao is also the Division Head of Molecular Pathology in the Department of Pathology, Director of Translational Genomics Laboratory in the School of Medicine, and Director of Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Zhao’s clinical expertise is in the area of molecular pathology and personalized medicine. His basic science research interests are in HIV/AIDS, cancer biology and nanoparticle-based single molecule detections. Dr. Zhao has published over one hundred scientific papers and has served on numerous scientific editorial boards including Clinical and Applied Immunology Reviews, Clinical Laboratory Science, Cell Research, Cell and Biosciences, Chinese Journal of Clinical and Experimental Virology, Journal of Clinical and Experimental Pathology, Frontiers in Virology, Microbial Cell, PLoS One and Retrovirology. He has been invited to review scientific grant applications for funding agencies of over 10 different countries and has chaired a number of NIH grant review study panels. Experimental Pathology

Dr. Alahari obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Master of Science in Human Genetics from India in 1983 and 1986 respectively. His Ph.D. in Molecular Biology was awarded by Drexel University, Philadelphia in the year 1994. From 1994 to 1998, Dr. Alahari did a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Since 1998, he has been a faculty member at the University of North Carolina and in 2004 joined the LSUHSC as Associate Professor of the Department of Biochemistry. During his tenure at the University of North Carolina, he discovered a novel protein that he termed, Nischarin. Dr. Alahari has published several papers describing the function of Nischarin. He has served on editorial review boards and study sections. In addition he availed visiting professorships at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and Rockefeller University, New York.

Molecular Biology

Wenqing Cao, MD is a gastrointestinal pathologist and assistant professor at University of Rochester Medical Center. She received her Medical Degree from Tongji Medical University, China. She completed Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency at Northwester University and Gastrointestinal Pathology fellowship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. Since 1998, Dr. Cao has done extensive basic and clinical translational research in GI malignancies. He has published more than 20 papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an editorial board member.

Gabriela Oprea-Ilies has a medical degree from The Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, Romania. She completed pathology residency at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and Cytology fellowship at Emory University, Atlanta, GA. Philipp A. Schnabel started as a resident in the Dept. of Surgery at the University of Giessen, Germany at the age of 24 years. After three years in general, trauma, cardiac and thoracic surgery he finished his M.D, and changed to the University of Gottingen. There he worked experimentally and mainly morphologically on cardiac and organ (lung) protection in the group of Hans-Jurgen Bretschneider, After \"Habilitation\" for Physiology he changed to the Institute of Pathology at the University Clinics Heidelberg. Since his Board Certification in General Pathology in 2001 he is Senior Pathologist, since 2003 responsible for the laboratory of the Institute of Pathology at the Thoraxklinik Heidelberg at the University Clinics Heidelberg. After his \"Habilitation\" for Pathology in 2003, he became Professor (apl.) in General Pathology in 2006. He has published more than 100 papers as author or co-author in reputed journals and has been serving as PI of repute in different positions or studies.

Rajat Sethi received his PhD from the Department of Medicine, University of Manitoba, Canada. Dr. Sethi is currently the Chair of Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences at the California Health Sciences University, Clovis, California. Prior to this he served as the Assistant Dean for Research and Evidence Based Practice at the Texas A&M Health Science Center. He has more than 100 publications in the field of cardiac pathology, holds 18 patents, has authored 7 books, and serves in the editorial board for many journals. Dr. Sethi has received grants from federal, local agencies, and from various foundations. He has been an invited speaker in many national and international meetings and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his contribution to research and education

Luo been studying molecular pathology related to human malignancies in the last 23 years. Currently, he is a Professor of Pathology and Director of High Throughput Genome Center at University of Pittsburgh. In the last 13 years, Dr. Luo has been largely focusing on genetic and molecular mechanism of human prostate and hepatocellular carcinomas. In this period, his group has identified and characterized several genes that are related to prostate cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma, including SAPC, myopodin, CSR1, GPx3, ITGA7, MCM7, MT1h and GPC3. He has characterized several signaling pathways that play critical role in prostate cancer development, including Myopodin-ILK-MCM7 inhibitory signaling, myopodin-zyxin motility inhibition pathway, CSR1-CPSF3 and CSR1-XIAP apoptotic pathways, MT1h-EHMT1 egigenomic signaling, ITGA7-HtrA2 tumor suppression pathway, GPx3-PIG3 cell death pathway, and AR-MCM7 oncogenic pathway. He proposed prostate cancer field effect in 2002. He is one of the pioneers in utilizing high throughput gene expression and genome analyses to analyze field effects in prostate cancer and liver cancer. He is also the first in using methylation array to analyze prostate cancer. Recently, Dr. Luo\'s group found that patterns of copy number variants of certain specific genome loci, are predictive of prostate cancer clinical outcomes, regardless tissue origin. Overall, these findings advance our understanding on how cancer develops and behaves, and lay down the foundation for better future diagnosis and treatment of human malignancies.

Ekaterine Kldiashvili has completed her Ph.D at the age of 30 years from Tbilisi State University. She is the Executive Director of Georgian Telemedicine Union (Association), NGO focusing on implementation of eHealth and telemedicine projects. She has published more than 25 papers in reputed journals, edited one book and contributing chapters to two books.

Wei Xin is an attending physician and associate residency program Director of pathology at University Hospital Case Medical Center, and Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University. He received his medical degree from Shanghai Medical University and Ph.D. from SUNY at Buffalo, and pathology residency training at University of Michigan. During his career, Xin has published dozens of paper and gave multiple presentation and workshop at national and international meetings. He is also in charge of mice histology at Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and the director of autopsy service of the university hospital.

Kogan Eugenia is a Chief of Pathology department of RF Research Center of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology and Professor of the Anatomic Pathology Department of The I.M.Sechenov Moscow Medical University. In 1991 she completed Doctor of Science in Medicine, Doctoral Thesis: Morphogenesis of Peripheral Lung Cancer\". Since 1995 she is a Member of Russian Division of the International Academy of Pathology and Chief of Russian Division of International Society of EM and Immunocytochhemistry. She is the author of 12 monographers and more than 120 publications in scientific journals. Her fields of research-clinical pathology, pulmonology, gynecology and general pathology (oncomorphology, repair, inflammation).

Essam Mohamed Ibraheem has completed his Ph.D. at the age of 35 years from Cairo University, Egypt and Postdoctoral studies from Cairo University. He is the Director Deputy of Animal Health Research Institute since 2010 till now and Prof.Dr. in pathology Department in the institute since 2009 till now. He has published 25 scientific researches related to infectious and zoonotic diseases of human and animals in Egypt and other African and Arabian Countries. Member of twinning project for the general organization for veterinary services in Egypt, the project committee and evaluation of research before publication in AHRI, Member of Biosafety and Biosecurity Association in Egypt.

Siddiqui is the Director of Cytopathology and FNA services at the Emory University Hospitals, in Atlanta, GA. He completed his Pathology residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Illinois. This was followed by a Surgical Pathology Fellowship at M.D.Anderson Cancer Center In Houston, TX, followed by a Cytopatholgy Fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. Dr. Siddiqui has specialized in Cytopathology and has published extensively in this area. He has also given numerous workshops at national and international meetings and serves on numerous editorial boards of Pathology journals.

Drazen M. Jukic M.D., Ph.D. serves as the Chief of Dermatopathology at James A. Haley VA Hospital, Tampa, Florida. Dr. Jukic serves as a Medical Director of histology and immunohistochemistry at UPMC Shadyside. Dr. Jukic serves as Director of dermatopathology fellowship, dermatopathology unit. He served as a Member of Medical Advisory Board at Digipath, Inc. He serves as a Member of Clinical team at Omnyx, LLC. He is a member of a Digital Pathology Imaging Group (DPIG) and is actively involved in creating and maintaining a large digital storage facility for whole slide imaging, digital imaging and telepathology. Dr. Jukic served in several appointed positions in organized medicine, including as a delegate for the American Medical Association and American Society of Clinical Pathologists Dr. Jukic serves as an Assistant Professor in the departments of dermatology and pathology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He serves as an Associate Professor of University of South Florida. He is an active member of the melanoma group of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Dr. Drazen\'s research efforts center around digital anatomic pathology, including telemedicine and bioinformatics.

Chan graduated from Chungzhan Medical College (Sun Yat-sen University) in China, in 1967. She then received her B.A. and M.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1972 and 1975, respectively. She later completed her ophthalmology residency at Stanford University Medical Center in 1979. Subsequently, she fulfilled two post-doctoral trainings in ophthalmic pathology under Dr. W. Richard Green at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital (1979-1982); and in clinical ocular immunology under Dr. Robert B. Nussenblatt at the National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes of Health (1982-1986). She was certified with the American Board of Ophthalmology and continued her academic endeavors as a medical officer at the NEI. Dr. Chan was promoted to the chief of the Immunopathology Section in the Laboratory of Immunology in 1992. Dr. Chan became head of the NEI Histopathology Core in 1999. The core, which has a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Approved (CLIA) certification, receives both clinical and experimental specimens, and processes 6000-8000 samples annually. Dr. Chan is also a mentor to NEI clinical and research post-doctoral and post-baccalaureate fellows. She has been helping in the development and improvement of ophthalmology and vision research in China and, in this process, has promoted exchange among ophthalmologists and vision researchers within China, the United States, and the world.

The research activities and goals of the Immunopathology Section include two major areas: (1) Research on clinical specimens with the aims of sharpening diagnosis, understanding disease pathogenesis, and improving patient management. These aims include primary intraocular lymphoma, uveitis, and age-related macular degeneration. (2) Research on model systems of experimental eye diseases. The goal here is to study different pathological conditions mimicking various human ocular diseases such as degeneration, inflammation, and neoplasm and to evaluate the effects of new therapeutic agents on these models.

George Perry, PhD, Marine Biology, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California at San Diego Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Cell Biology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas Perry joined the UTSA faculty in 2006 from Case Western Reserve University where he was Professor of Pathology and Neurosciences and Chair of the Department of Pathology. He is distinguished as one of the top Alzheimer´s disease researchers with over 900 publications, one of the top 100 most-cited scientists in neuroscience and behavior and one of the top 25 scientists in free radical research. Perry has been cited over 27,000 times and is recognized as an ISI highly cited researcher. Perry is editor for numerous journals and is editor-in-chief for the Journal of Alzheimer´s Disease. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, the Microscopy Society of America, and past-president of the American Association of Neuropathologists, as well as a member of the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives. Perry is recognized internationally for his work. He is a Foreign Correspondent Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences and a Foreign Member of the Mexican National Academy of Sciences.

Our studies are focused on the mechanism of formation and physiological consequences of the cytopathology of Alzheimer disease. We have shown that oxidative damage is the initial cytopathology in Alzheimer disease. We are working to determine the sequence of events leading to neuronal oxidative damage and the source of the increased oxygen radicals. Our current studies focus on (i) the mechanism for RNA-based redox metal binding; (ii) the consequences of RNA oxidation on protein synthesis rate and fidelity; (iii) the role of redox active metals in mediating prooxidant and antioxidant properties; (iv) the signal transduction pathways altered in Alzheimer disease that allow neurons to evade apoptosis; and (v) mechanism of phosphorylation control of oxidative damage to neurofilament proteins.

Richard Zhao, PhD, MS, is a Professor of Pathology, Microbiology-Immunology and Human Virology at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine. He is also the Division Head of Molecular Pathology, Director of Translational Genomics Lab and Director of Molecular Diagnostics Lab and Medical Center. Dr. Zhao has extensive experiences in basic science research, translational research, clinical trials and clinical applications of gene-based diagnosis, HIV/AIDS, cancer biology and personalized medicine. Dr. Zhao has served on numerous scientific editorial boards including Cell Research, Cell & Biosciences, Clinical and Applied Immunology Review, Clinical Laboratory Science, Frontiers in BioSciences, Frontiers in Virology, Journal of Clinical and Experimental Pathology, Journal of Molecular Genetics (editor-in-chief), Medical Science Monitor, PLoS ONE, Retrovirology, and Chinese Journal of Clinical and Experimental Virology (associate editor). Rossitza Lazova, MD is Director of the Dermatopathology Fellowship at Yale University, Department of Dermatology, and Associate Professor of Dermatology and Pathology. Dr. Lazova is the founder and principal investigator of the Yale School of Medicine Spitzoid Biospecimen and Data Repository, which is an international biospecimen and data collection bank and an invaluable resource for researchers and collaborators within Yale as well as from other institutions. Dr. Lazova received her MD from Medical University, Sofia, Bulgaria and did a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. She trained with Dr. A. Bernard Ackerman in Dermatopathology and co-authored a book with him. Dr. Lazova is involved with various Committees through the American Society of Dermatopathology and the International Society of Dermatopathology. She has authored numerous publications and has lectured throughout the world on various topics including melanocytic lesions and Spitzoid melanocytic neoplasms in particular. Dr. Lazova is on the editorial board and is a reviewer for multiple journals.

Carlos Cordon-Cardo, MD, Ph.D., a distinguished physician-scientist and recognized internationally for his groundbreaking research in experimental pathology and molecular oncology, holds the appointment of Chair for the Department of Pathology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Cordon-Cardo is a leader in the mechanisms of tumor suppression. His research has focused on the analyses of multidrug resistance and alteration of tumor suppression genes in human cancer. He developed and implemented an oncologic molecular pathology discipline and helped create the \\\"systems pathology\\\" platform. This approach uses systems biology to form mathematical models of the interaction and behavior of cancer cells with the goal of determining tumor pathogenesis and clinical outcome. Cordon-Cardo\\\'s contributions to cancer research have had important implications for tumor suppression, particularly in bladder and prostate cancers, and soft tissue sarcomas. Currently, his research is aimed at understanding the cooperative effects of mutations of cell-cycle regulation, and genes that prevent cell death cancer. Additionally, he is developing and characterizing animal models for loss of function of specific pathways by targeted gene disruption using bladder cancer and sarcomas. Recent studies from his laboratory have linked adult stem cells and cancer, revealing that certain tumors originate from distinct differentiation stages in stem-cell fate and development. A frequently cited author, Cordon-Cardo has received National Cancer Institute funding for his research. He has developed numerous patents, is a dedicated mentor, and he holds prominent posts in several national and international professional organizations. Dr. Cordon-Cardo has outlined a broad vision that redefines the discipline of Pathology, placing it at the core of patient management and individualized medicine. He is aggressively recruiting senior and junior faculty, identifying and developing subspecialty areas, such as molecular and systems pathology programs, and expanding biorepositories and databases to further enhance translational research, converting his vision into a reality. Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Cordon-Cardo served as Vice-Chair of Pathology, Professor of Pathology, and Urology, and Associate Director for Infrastructure at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He also created the Division of Molecular Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and served as its first director. Dr. Cordon-Cardo obtained his MD from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, in 1980, and his PhD in Cell Biology and Genetics from Cornell University Medical College in 1985.

Experimental pathology and molecular oncology

Rajat Sethi received his PhD in physiology from University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada in 1994. Later as the Director of Preclinical Research and Drug Discovery for a biotech start up in Canada, he was instrumental in management and development of MC-1, a lead patented compound. In 2005 he moved to the US as one of the founding faculty member at the Texas A&M Health Science Center, College of Pharmacy. Currently he serves as the Assistant Dean for Research and Evidence Based Practice at the Texas A&M Health Science Center, College of Nursing. The main focus of his Cardiovascular Research and Drug Discovery and Development Laboratory (CRDDL) is pharmaceutics, physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology with special emphasis on cardiovascular pathology. He holds over 20 patents and numerous patent applications are pending. Recent finding from his laboratory on the cardiac injury induced by air pollution was recognized by the American Heart Association in 2010 resulting in worldwide media placements of his work. His research has been cited and results validated in animal and human studies published by United States Environmental Protection Agency. Latest published results from his laboratory on potential biomarkers associated with air pollution mediate cardiac pathology was the subject of a recent news release. Dr. Sethi has presented at several national and international conferences and serves on the editorial board of many international scientific journals. He has also received numerous teaching awards throughout his career and encourages undergraduate and graduate student research.

Cardiovascular Research and Drug Discovery and Development.

Huamin Wang received his M.D. from Tongji Medical University (China) in 1987 and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from the University of Texas (UT) Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (Houston, Texas) in 1999. He completed his residency training at UT Medical School-Houston in 2003 and fellowship training in selective surgical pathology at UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in 2004. Dr. Wang is currently a tenured associate professor of pathology specialized in gastrointestinal, liver and pancreatic pathology at UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and an associate professor at UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences-Houston. His research has led to more than 90 peer-reviewed publications and 15 research grants.

In addition to the diagnostic pathology, Dr. Wang is actively involved in basic, clinical and translational research in the tumor biology, early detection, and identification of new therapeutic targets for pancreatic cancer, which is one of the most lethal human tumors.

Sin Hang Lee, M.D. graduated from Wuhan Medical College in China. After a residency-fellowship at Cornell-New York Hospital and Memorial Hospital for Cancer, Dr. Lee was certified by the American Board of Pathology and obtained the F.R.C.P. (C) degree by examination in 1966. He was on the faculty of McGill University and Yale University from 1968-2004 while practicing hospital-based pathology. Dr. Lee is currently the director of Milford Molecular Diagnostics, Milford, Connecticut. In the past 10 years, Dr. Lee has developed Sanger sequencing-based testing methods for HPV, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Lyme disease borreliae and Ebolavirus implementable in community hospitals.

Dr. Kindelberger joined ConVerge in a full-time Pathology role in 2011, after having spent nearly 10 years at Brigham and Women's Hospital, beginning with his Residency in Anatomic Pathology in 2002. He next completed two clinical sub-specialty Fellowships: one in Cytopathology under the direction of Dr. Edmund Cibas, and the other in Women's and Perinatal Pathology under the direction of Dr. Christopher Crum. On completion of his training, Dr Kindelberger was appointed to the B & W's staff, serving in multiple roles, including Pathologist and Instructor in Pathology for Harvard Medical School. He has published significantly in the areas of gynecologic pathology, specifically ovarian carcinogenesis and trophoblastic disease pathology, with over 40 credited publications since 2003. Dr. Kindelberger received the Pier Paci Award for Excellence in Pathology Teaching in 2010, a testament to his willingness and ability to share his knowledge and expertise and colleagues to his students in the Harvard Medical School community. Dr. Kindelberger is board certified in both Anatomic Pathology and Cytopathology.

His recent research is related to circulating tumor cells in patients with metastatic cancers of the prostate, lung and breast.

Merce Jorda, M.D. is board certified in American Board of Pathology-Cytopathology. Has completed her fellowship from Jackson Memorial Hospital in Affiliation with the University Of Miami School Of Medicine. Prof. Jorda is the Medical Director, Clinical Laboratory Services -UMHC/SCCC and UM Hospital. Dr. Jorda’s research interests include molecular pathology of cancer and immunocytochemistry of tumors. She is interested in all markers, immunohistochemical and molecular, which may give the diagnostic, prognostic, predictive and treatment information. Dr. Jorda’s research interests have been basically at the level of anatomic pathology and cytopathology, specifically in the areas of breast and genitourinary tract malignancies as well as cytopathology.

Sahar Samaha, M.D. is board certified in AP/CP and Cytopathology. Has completed her residency and 2 fellowships in surgical pathology and cytopathology at University of Kansas Medical Center. She is in practice for over 15 years. She got her medical degree from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. Before moving to the united states, she finished her residency and obtained her master’s degree in Ophthalmology. She is the director of Aloha lab at Miraca life sciences.

Dr. Li is an internationally recognized expert in the field of cytopathology and co-PI in Johns Hopkins Biomarker Discovery Center. She provides diagnostic service at Johns Hopkins, and conducts research in the field of novel biomarkers in lung and prostate cancers. Her research has been presented at many national/international meetings. Dr. Li also serves as editorial board members for several journals, committee member of the American Society of Cytopathology, and study sections of government agents and private organizations. She has more than 70 publications and book chapters. Dr. Li is also the editor of “Diagnostic Cytopathology Board Review and Self-Assessment”.
