Track 1: Cardiologists

A cardiologist is a doctor with special training and skill in finding, treating and preventing diseases of the heart and blood vessels, basically the entire “Cardiovascular System’.  Cardiology is a rapidly changing field. New technologies such as drug-eluting stents, left ventricular assist devices, and novel inflammatory markers, and imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging and three-dimensional echocardiography, offers an unprecedented view of the function of the heart in health and an unparalleled scope of therapies with which to treat disease. Yet, cardiologists like to think that they are more innovative and pioneering than their colleagues in other specialties, seemingly the least possible that there are equally exciting challenges in other fields too.

Track 2: Heart Diseases

Heart disease includes numerous problems, many of which are related to a process called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a condition that develops when a substance called plaque builds up in the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can stop the blood flow. This can cause a heart attack or stroke.

Track 3: Pediatric Cardiology and Geriatric Cardiology:

A pediatric cardiologist is a pediatrician who has received extensive training in diagnosing and treating children's cardiac problems. Evaluation and treatment may begin with the fetus since heart problems can now be detected before birth. The Division of Pediatric Cardiology is responsible for the diagnosis of congenital heart defects, performing diagnostic procedures such as echocardiograms, cardiac catheterizations, and electrophysiology studies, and for the ongoing management of the sequelae of heart disease in infants, children and adolescents.

Geriatric cardiology refers to cardiovascular care of patients 65 years of age or older. The geriatric population is further broken down into elderly (between ages 75 and 84 years) and very elderly (85 years of age or older), with numbers reaching 40 million and 13 million people, respectively. Vascular disorders such as atherosclerosis and peripheral arterial disease cause significant morbidity and mortality in aged people.

Track 4: Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology is a branch of cardiology that deals specifically with the catheter based treatment of structural heart diseases. A large number of procedures can be performed on the heart by catheterization. This most commonly involves the insertion of a sheath into the femoral artery (but, in practice, any large peripheral artery or vein) and cannulating the heart under X-ray visualization (most commonly fluoroscopy).

Track 5: Electrocardiography:

Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) is the process of recording the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time using electrodes placed on the skin. These electrodes detect the tiny electrical changes on the skin that arise from the heart muscle's electrophysiologic pattern of depolarizing during each heartbeat. It is a very commonly performed cardiology test. This record, the electrocardiogram (also known as an ECG), provides information about the part of the heart that triggers each heartbeat (the pacemaker, called the sinoatrial or sinus node), the nerve conduction pathways of the heart, and the rate and rhythm of the heart. Usually, an ECG is obtained if a heart disorder is suspected.

Track 6: Diabetes and the Heart:

The term "diabetic heart disease" (DHD) refers to heart disease that develops in people who have diabetes. Compared with people who don't have diabetes, people who have diabetes; are at higher risk for heart disease, have additional causes of heart disease, may develop heart disease at a younger age, may have more severe heart diseases. In CHD, a waxy substance called plaque (plak) builds up inside the coronary arteries. These arteries supply your heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood. Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. When plaque builds up in the arteries, the condition is called atherosclerosis.

Track 7: Cardio – Oncology:

An understanding of onco-cardiology or cardio-oncology is critical for the effective care of cancer patients. Virtually all antineoplastic agents are associated with cardiotoxicity. All patients being considered for chemotherapy, especially those who have prior cardiac history should undergo detailed cardiovascular evaluation to optimize the treatment. Serial assessment of left ventricular systolic function and cardiac biomarkers might also be considered in selected patient populations. Cardiotoxic effects of chemotherapy might be decreased by the concurrent use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, or beta-blockers. Antiplatelet or anticoagulation therapy might be considered in patients with a potential hypercoagulable state associated with chemotherapy or cancer. Open dialogue between both cardiologists and oncologists will be required for optimal patient care.

Track 8: Heart and Blood Vessel Surgeries:

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the most common type of heart surgery. CABG improves blood flow to the heart. Surgeons use CABG to treat people who have severe coronary heart disease (CHD).  For the heart to work well, blood must flow in only one direction. The heart's valves make this possible. Healthy valves open and close in a precise way as the heart pumps blood. Each valve has a set of flaps called leaflets. The leaflets open to allow blood to pass from one heart chamber into another or into the arteries. Then the leaflets close tightly to stop blood from flowing backward. Heart surgery is used to fix leaflets that don't open as wide as they should. This can happen if they become thick or stiff or fuse together. As a result, not enough blood flows through the valve.

Track 9: Cardiac Nursing

Cardiac nursing is a nursing specialty that works with patients who suffer from various conditions of the cardiovascular system. Cardiac nurses help treat conditions such as unstable angina, cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction and cardiac dysrhythmia under the direction of a cardiologist. Cardiac nurses perform postoperative care on a surgical unit, stress test evaluations, cardiac monitoring, vascular monitoring, and health assessments. Cardiac nurses work in many different environments, including coronary care units (CCU), cardiac catheterization, intensive care units (ICU), operating theatres, cardiac rehabilitation centers, clinical research, cardiac surgery wards, cardiovascular intensive care units (CVICU), and cardiac medical wards.

Track 10: Nuclear Cardiology:

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the western world. Each year in the U.S.A, more than 500,000 men and women die from coronary artery disease. During the past two decades, major strides have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Nuclear Cardiology has played a pivotal role in establishing the diagnosis of heart disease and in the assessment of disease extent and the prediction of outcomes in the setting of coronary artery disease. Nuclear cardiology studies use non-invasive techniques to assess myocardial blood flow, evaluate the pumping function of the heart as well as visualize the size and location of a heart attack. Among the techniques of nuclear cardiology, myocardial perfusion imaging is the most widely used.

Track 11: Sports Cardiology:

Sports Cardiology performs heart screenings that identify potentially serious cardiovascular issues in young athletes. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in exercising young athletes, and is most commonly set off by problems—such as structural heart disorders or electrical circuitry issues—which are not usually found during routine physical examinations. Many of the conditions that cause sudden cardiac death in young athletes are detectable by an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), a non-invasive test that measures the electrical activity of the heart. Athletes with established cardiovascular disease or those at risk have specific goals and objectives in mind. They will want to continue to play their sport and want to be very safe. The main objective of the Sports Cardiology Center is to work with any athlete along the spectrum - professional athletes, recreational exercisers, to weekend warriors to help them achieve these goals.

A case report on Cardiology provides an appropriate forum for all cardiologists by rendering their important clinical cases of recent occurrence. Learning from medical cases provides valuable experience not only for clinicians, but also for students and paramedical staff members. Rare medical cases and conditions discovered through the latest methods of examination are invigorated. Furthermore, learning diagnostic processes from medical cases and the interpretation of symptoms is important to train and burgeon the thinking processes which are being used in the clinical field.

Track 14: Cardiologists Training and Education:

Cardiologists are the medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating disorders of the heart.  To become a cardiologist, you are contemplating on embarking on a long, challenging, and most importantly, fulfilling the journey. The field of cardiology encompasses so many different types of diseases and procedures, there are many different types of cardiology one may choose to practice depending on his or her interests and skill sets, and the type of work they’d like to do. A cardiologist is not a surgeon. The physicians who do open heart surgery are cardio-thoracic surgeons, and they complete a surgical residency program, not an internal medicine residency as cardiologists do. To keep up with the expanding knowledge and science in cardiovascular medicine, the cardiology community needs to understand new educational initiatives and formulate pathways to teach, mentor, and educate trainees to become competent cardiovascular specialists.
